From Lhasa via Shigatse to the base camp of the highest mountain on earth.

Eleven days in the heart of the Himalaya. The trip starts in Chengdu, then continues by air to Lhasa, home of the Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple, where pilgrims from every region gather daily. On via the sacred Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse to Shigatse, then to Everest Base Camp and Rongbuk Monastery at 5,200 metres. The return is by Tibet railway across the plateau to Xining. The Tibet Travel Permit is included. Accommodation in hotels of local 4-star category, in Dingri in a guesthouse, plus one night in a sleeper. Minimum number of participants: 2. Group size maximum 15.

The Tibet Travel Permit cannot be applied for through a tour operator by journalists, diplomats, senior government employees, members of the military or ethnic Tibetans.
This trip spends several days at altitudes between 3,650 and 5,200 metres. Please discuss your suitability with your doctor beforehand.
The Potala Palace is subject to access restrictions. Short-notice changes to the programme are possible.

International flights are not included. On request we will quote flights at the current fare.

Sample Itinerary

Day by Day.

Day 1

Arrival in Chengdu

Arrival in Chengdu. Your guide meets you and takes you to the hotel. The rest of the day is free, for a rest or a first walk through the city centre.

Day 2

Flight to Lhasa

After breakfast on by air to Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The afternoon is for acclimatising to 3,650 metres. Plan little for the first day; the body needs time.

Day 3

Jokhang Temple and Potala Palace

In the morning the Jokhang Temple, destination of countless pilgrims and the most important sanctuary in Tibet, followed by a walk along the Barkhor with its stalls for crafts and food. In the afternoon the Potala Palace, former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and, at almost 3,700 metres, the highest palace in the world.

Day 4

Sera, Drepung and Norbulingka

North of the city lies Sera Monastery with around 800 monks; with luck you can watch one of the religious debates. Then Drepung to the west, one of the most important teaching monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism, where the Dalai Lamas were also prepared. To close, Norbulingka, the former summer residence with its residential buildings and gardens.

Day 5

Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse

About 100 kilometres from Lhasa, at roughly 4,400 metres, lies the sacred Yamdrok Lake, whose clear water reflects mountains and clouds. Then the fort at Gyantse and the Kumbum stupa. In the evening on to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet.

Day 6

Tashilhunpo and on to Dingri

In the morning Tashilhunpo Monastery, seat of the Panchen Lama and since 1447 one of the four principal monasteries of Tibet. Around midday on to Dingri, which lies at the entrance to the national park around Mount Everest.

Day 7

Everest Base Camp

Drive to Everest Base Camp. You visit Rongbuk Monastery at 5,200 metres, the highest Buddhist monastery in the world. In clear weather the view from the monastery and the base camp reaches the summit. In the afternoon back to Shigatse.

Day 8

Market in Shigatse

A quieter day. In the morning the market, where nomads and villagers from the whole region sell their goods, correspondingly large and correspondingly photogenic. Afterwards back to Lhasa.

Day 9

By Tibet railway to Xining

On by train in a sleeper, four-berth compartment, to Xining. The journey is long but runs all day across the Tibetan plateau, which more than makes up for the time.

Day 10

Xining

Depending on arrival time you have breakfast on the train or at the hotel. After the Tibetan Buddhist temples of the previous days, today the Dongguan Mosque, which combines Chinese and Islamic building forms. Then time for the market in Xining, with crafts, fruit, vegetables and spices.

Day 11

Departure

After breakfast transfer to Xining airport for your return or onward journey.
