Sample Itinerary

Day by Day.

Day 1

Arrival in Beijing

Arrival at the airport of the Chinese capital. Your local guide meets you and takes you to the hotel. Depending on arrival time, the rest of the day is free.

Day 2

Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven

The day begins on Tian'anmen Square, where Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic in 1949 and where his mausoleum and the Monument to the People's Heroes stand in the centre. Behind the Gate of Heavenly Peace lies the Forbidden City, with the halls of the Outer Court and the smaller residential buildings behind them. In the afternoon the Temple of Heaven, whose park serves the people of Beijing as a meeting place.

Day 3

Summer Palace and Mutianyu

In the morning the Summer Palace on Kunming Lake, imperial garden art and architecture, with the well-known Marble Boat and the 700-metre corridor. In the afternoon to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. The section lies north of the city and is quieter than the better-known ones. By cable car up to the wall, returning to Beijing in the evening.

Day 4

By train to Xi'an

By high-speed train in about five hours to Xi'an, for centuries the seat of the Chinese emperors. After a break at the hotel to the Ming dynasty city wall, at 14 kilometres the largest and best preserved in China. You can walk it or cycle around it.

Day 5

Terracotta Army and Wild Goose Pagoda

The Terracotta Army of the first emperor Qin Shi Huang was among the first Chinese sites on the UNESCO list. You see the three excavated pits and the hall with the bronze chariots. In the afternoon the Great Wild Goose Pagoda from the Tang dynasty and the Great Mosque in the old town.

Day 6

On to Shanghai

In the morning by train to Shanghai. After arrival a walk along the Bund. On the western bank stand the trading houses of the colonial era, opposite the skyline of Pudong. Then the shopping street Nanjing Road. It is worth a second visit in the evening when everything is lit.

Day 7

Yu Garden and Shanghai Tower

The old town shows Shanghai towards the end of the Qing dynasty, today full of souvenir shops and well-known restaurants. Among them the Yu Garden, southern Chinese garden art and, despite the visitor numbers, a green island. Then the Urban Planning Exhibition Centre on People's Square, or alternatively the Shanghai Museum. Finally the Shanghai Tower and the view from 561 metres.

Day 8

Departure

Depending on your flight time, transfer to the airport for your return or onward journey.
