Eight days, two cities, no rush. Beijing supplies the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the Temple of Heaven, Shanghai the present day. In between there are two full free days, which sets this trip apart from the usual grand tours. Accommodation in hotels of local 4-star category, four nights Beijing, three Shanghai. Minimum number of participants: 2. Group size maximum 15.

Day by Day.
Arrival in Beijing
Arrival in Beijing. Your local guide meets you at the airport and takes you to the hotel. If your flight lands early, the afternoon is free for a first walk through the city.
Summer Palace and Great Wall
First the Summer Palace, the court's summer residence on Kunming Lake, with the Marble Boat on the shore and the 700-metre corridor. In the afternoon Mutianyu. This section of the Great Wall lies north of the city and is less crowded; a cable car takes you up. On the way back a photo stop at the Olympic Stadium.
Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven
Tian'anmen Square with the mausoleum and the Monument to the People's Heroes, then through the Gate of Heavenly Peace into the Forbidden City. You see the halls of the Outer Court and the residential buildings behind them. In the afternoon the Temple of Heaven, where emperors once prayed for good harvests and where the neighbourhood now plays cards and sings.
Beijing at your own pace
The day is free, with tips from your guide in advance. Anyone who prefers a guided option can book the optional excursion: the Lama Temple, the largest Tibetan Buddhist complex outside Tibet, then the Confucius Temple, a walk through the hutong and finally Jingshan Hill with the best view over the Forbidden City.
By high-speed train to Shanghai
On to Shanghai by high-speed train at up to 300 km/h. The afternoon suits the Bund and Nanjing Road. In the evening an optional acrobatics show; the Shanghai companies are known throughout the country.
Old town, Yu Garden and Shanghai Tower
The old town shows how Shanghai looked towards the end of the Qing dynasty. In its middle lies the Yu Garden, southern Chinese garden art in a small space and, despite the crowds, a green island. Later the view from the observation deck of the Shanghai Tower, then the Buddhist Longhua Temple a little outside the centre.
Suzhou and the water town of Luzhi
Once again a choice between exploring on your own and an optional excursion. The latter goes first to Luzhi, where the old houses are preserved and the canals are still used for transport, then on to Suzhou. There the Garden of the Master of the Nets, one of the smallest and finest gardens in China, plus a silk exhibition. Return to Shanghai in the evening.

Depending on your flight time, transfer to the airport for your return or onward journey.
