Metropolises, the Huangshan mountains and the West Lake of Hangzhou.
Fifteen days from the north to the southern coast. Beijing and Shanghai open the trip, then come the Huangshan mountains, which have occupied Chinese landscape painters for centuries and have been a UNESCO site since 1990. On to the West Lake of Hangzhou, the karst landscape around Yangshuo and via Guangzhou to Hong Kong. There is walking on two days, otherwise mostly high-speed train. Accommodation in hotels of local 4-star category, 14 nights. Minimum number of participants: 2. Group size maximum 15.

On days 7 and 8 there are longer walks, in the Huangshan mountains and from Hongcun to Tachuan, around three hours. Sure footing and normal fitness are assumed.
Light luggage is recommended for the ascent to Pingan and for the walking sections.

Day by Day.
Arrival in Beijing
Arrival at the airport of the capital. Your guide meets you and takes you to the hotel. Depending on arrival time there is room for a first walk through the city.
Summer Palace and Great Wall
First the Summer Palace, the first UNESCO site of this trip, with the Marble Boat on Kunming Lake and the long covered corridor. In the afternoon Mutianyu, a section of the Great Wall north of the city with noticeably fewer visitors. Cable car up, then walk as long as you like.
Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven
From Tian'anmen Square through the Gate of Heavenly Peace into the Forbidden City. You see the official halls of the Outer Court and the smaller buildings of the former private quarters. In the afternoon the Temple of Heaven, whose park now belongs to the neighbourhood.
By high-speed train to Shanghai
About five hours by express train from Beijing to Shanghai. After arrival a walk along the Bund, with the trading houses of the colonial era on one side and the Pudong skyline opposite. Then Nanjing Road, worth a second look in the evening.
Old town, Yu Garden and Shanghai Tower
The old town shows Shanghai towards the end of the Qing dynasty, with the Yu Garden in its middle. Then the Urban Planning Exhibition Centre on People's Square, or alternatively the Shanghai Museum. To close, the view from the observation deck of the Shanghai Tower.
To Huangshan and the old town of Tunxi
About three hours by high-speed train to the Huangshan mountains. The name means Yellow Mountain, yellow being the imperial colour, and the landscape has occupied countless painters. After check-in a walk through the small but lively old town of Tunxi at the foot of the range.
Walking in the Huangshan mountains
Today there is walking. The cable car takes you to the mountain station below the peaks, from where you walk the paths of the World Heritage site. The resemblance to classical Chinese landscape painting is quickly apparent, whether in the peaks, the ravines or a single pine in front of a rock face. Even at the top the path rises and falls steadily.
Hongcun, Tachuan and on to Hangzhou
First the traditional village of Hongcun, then a walk of around three hours to Tachuan over country roads, field paths and old stone tracks, passing through the village of Xieli. A short stroll in Xidi follows. Then by high-speed train in about two hours to Hangzhou.
West Lake and Lingyin Temple
In the morning the Buddhist Lingyin Temple, then a tea plantation and the Pagoda of Six Harmonies. In the afternoon the West Lake, a UNESCO site since 2011, with causeways, bridges and pavilions. The scene appears on the one-yuan note. In the adjoining Huagang Park more than 20,000 plant species grow.
The long ride to Yangshuo
More than 1,400 kilometres from Hangzhou to Guilin, about eight hours by high-speed train. After arrival directly on to Yangshuo, a small town in the finest stretch of the southern Chinese karst.
Bamboo raft and karst scenery
On a bamboo raft through the karst area, past steep hills, fields and villages. Afterwards there is ample time for a bike ride or a longer walk through the landscape.
On to Guangzhou
Back to Guilin and on by high-speed train to Guangzhou. After arrival transfer to the hotel and a break. In the evening the television tower in one of the new districts.
Guangzhou and journey to Hong Kong
In the morning the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, then Shamian Island with its colonial buildings and the Qingping market. Afterwards by high-speed train to Hong Kong, only about an hour since the line opened. The rest of the day is yours.
Hong Kong free or excursion to Macau
A free day. English is one of the official languages and public transport is excellent, so you will manage well on your own. Alternatively an optional excursion to Macau with an English-speaking guide, where the Portuguese legacy is visible in the old quarters, at the ruins of St Paul's and in the casinos.
Victoria Peak and departure
On a half-day tour you see the south coast of Hong Kong Island, the former fishing village of Aberdeen and finally Victoria Peak with its view over the island and Kowloon. In the evening transfer to the airport for your return or onward journey.
